The original Quartz BBS was started on December 5, 1989 by Hobbit at Rutgers University in December of 1989, and handed off to Dave Pirmann in early 1990. It survived many years and many problems there, until it finally closed its doors forever in December of 1994.
Over the years, other Citadel-based BBSes popped up on the Internet. Some disappeared, some still survive. However, many of those who had frequented the original Quartz felt the need to bring its particular code back to life.
Through the efforts and resources of some of the original Quartzers, and thanks to the generosity of the host of its new home, Quartz II was born, not as a replacement, but as an extension of the original Quartz.
